Technically, surfing includes a board and a wave. That includes stand up paddlers, skimboarders (the Domke kind), boogers, and God forbid, Wave-jetters. River surfing is surfing. It’s just a different kind of surfing. Think of it like ice cream: bubble gum ice cream and rocky road are totally different, but they’re still both ice cream.
From the highest peaks in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, runoff fills rivers to the brim. Depending on the year, sometimes the runoff is enough to create standing waves in those rivers… and when it is, rivers surfers are there. And they’re surfing. Think about it: if you were stuck inland, wouldn’t you give this a go? Yeah, you would.
