There are a lot of ways people have come together in an effort to clean the ocean. Countless organizations dedicate themselves to recruiting volunteers for beach clean ups, educating the masses about how to avoid letting their trash ever get to the ocean, and of course we’ve all learned the reduce, re use and recycle routine since grade school. However, nobody ever told us “drink a beer, save a turtle.” And quite frankly, as valuable and awesome as all those previously mentioned techniques are, drinking beer is more fun.
If this all sounds too good to be true, just check out this new Kickstarter campaign for proof. It’s plain and simply called “the beer bottle shirt.” No, it’s not a shirt with different beer bottles printed onto it for irony and the amusement of hispters everywhere. Nor is it a shirt shaped like a beer bottle of some sort (because that would be uncomfortable and not fashionable). It’s actually a shirt made from beer bottles. That’s the straightforward and genius campaign sparked by Pura Kai, creators of an ocean friendly clothing line. Step 1, go to a concert or event partnered with Pura Kai. Step 2, have a good time at said event and enjoy a cold one. From that point, your job is mostly done. Pura Kai partners with groups to collect the bottles and trash left behind from a good time. And rather than letting those bottles make their way to a landfill or straight to our oceans they’re turning them into tee shirts. Yes, beer bottles that are reborn as tee shirts.
It’s a simple yet massive step in the fight to keep our environment clean. While many efforts do a great deal to clean up the mess once it’s made, Pura Kai’s Beer Bottle Shirt Campaign teaches an important lesson about making the right choices before a mess is ever left behind at all. Sustainable surfboards, wetsuits, clothing, and much more are all growing in popularity for these exact values: they teach us to watch our footprint through every step of the process. Who knows, you’ll probably save more than a turtle or two.
