Ian Walsh spends his whole life chasing waves. Not regular waves, either. Walsh wants waves that would make most people run for the hills.
His life is spent thinking about what’s around the bend, about what he might find, and about how he needs to find it. The only time that his brain shuts off, according to him, is when he’s actually on a wave. But, unlike many in the internet generation, Walsh wants to see it for himself, not through a screen. “You learn a lot more about an area being there and crawling around every little option on the coast than you do sitting on Google Earth at home,” he says in the episode of Red Bull’s Peaking.
Ian, Makua Rothman, Ezekiel Lau, Danny Fuller, and Zak Noyle packed their bags and headed to Japan to chase a swell that initially looked very, very promising. Two massive hurricanes were spinning off the coast, and it was shaping up to be the trip of a lifetime. But sometimes, things just don’t work out… and that’s part of the fun.
