The Inertia

“When there are waves here the whole vibe just changes. As a surfer you can really feel it. You can feel it in the air.” Those are words any surfer in the world, speaking any language known to man, can understand and appreciate. And it’s probably the most appropriate voice over to open any surf film.

We receive a lot of links from filmmakers, photographers, and creative minds of all sorts at The Inertia on a daily basis. This one came accompanied with a short and sweet message: “Bombs, knives and terror aside; a glimpse into the lives of Israeli surfers.” The subject line alone was enough to warrant opening and giving a nice watch. And it gives great context to this film itself. This is a part of the world most often associated with ongoing war in your news feeds and on network television. But the Mediterranean brings enough waves to its shores that these Israelis live a life centered around being in the ocean. Surf, surf and surf. Surfers may not be the first people that pop into your mind when thinking of the Middle East but here are a few minutes of proof that in every corner of the world, even if you need to bust out the soft tops to enjoy whatever you can get, building your life in a way that keeps you tethered to the ocean isn’t half bad.
