There is no coastline in central Texas. No saltwater beaches, and no surf. When Save the Waves Film Festival comes to Austin this week, the nearest place to catch a wave will be over two-hundred miles away.
But Austin has a critical and creative community of educators, activists, and artists. People who work rigorously to imagine and take steps toward a better world. We started Punctum Records over two years ago to find sustainable methods of care for Austin musicians and to foster shared action. We help one another become more proficient with our instruments and writing, find inspiration, and generously participate in each other’s work and life. We still find our stoke in Austin, Texas.
Last year, when Punctum Records went to Santa Barbara, California for a showcase and met folks from Save the Waves, we quickly found that we were of similar mind. We both work to protect our communities and find creative methods of education and action. The opportunity to come together and share ideas between our communities is vital because in each of our worlds we understand that we’re all in this together.
November 12th at Studium in East Austin will feature music and film to benefit the work of Save the Waves and raise awareness on the dangers facing the coast for those who might not get to see it everyday, but still want it to thrive. After all, you can’t have surf rock without surf.
