The Inertia

If, by chance, you had your sights set on holding a world record for the longest surf session in the history of man, here’s what you’re up against: 30 hours, 11 minutes and more than 400 waves ridden with no more than five minutes in between paddling for a wave, catching a wave, or paddling back out after surfing a wave. Good luck. You’ll need it to top Josh Enslin.

In August the South African man announced he’d bet setting out to one up American ben Shaw’s 2011 record of 29 hours and 27 minutes to raise money, food and clothes for children in need. The grand effort brought in over $2,000 and a horde of fans to Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth. So for parts of two days and through one entire night Enslin surfed with every wave catching hoots from the crowd. Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records were on hand to supervise the almost day and a half session, making it the new unofficial world record. The only thing left is to watch the full 1,811 minutes worth of video to give a final approval and send Josh Enslin into the history books.

“I was thinking, ‘push forward, you can do this,’ and on the 27th hour I knew I had it,” he said. “I still had some energy left, but this was clearly from the hype, as when I got home I passed out in thirty seconds.” Hopefully Josh wakes up before somebody tries to beat his new world record.
