Dane Reynolds has always been a bit of a square peg the surf world (luckily) didn’t try too hard to fit into a round hole. He’s far too creative, in and out of the water, to be handcuffed by the Tour. Too freakishly talented to fall into obscurity. And too bright not to carve his own path. The man is so good he’ll forever be in the conversation as possible “best ever” with no regard to his ambivalence toward competing. In fact, it speaks to his otherworldly talent that we expected so much from him in a contest jersey that never came to fruition, and instead of labeling him a bust we instead shifted our own perspective and let him redefine the label.
So how in the world do you package all that ability and all that creativity into something we can all love so much? Dane’s answer to that question was to surround himself with the only other minds that could keep up. “The net did get flooded with shit,” he says. “And I kind of got sick of seeing so much shit on the internet. Now it’s got to be pretty worthwhile to put it up there.”
And if there’s one thing we know about a Dane Reynolds clip/edit/segment/movie: it’s not going to be shit.
