Surf trips often take us to weird and wild places. And while you’re there, it’s easy to stay cooped up in the hotel or never leave the boat, blinding yourself to the unfamiliar culture of the natives. In place of a cultural exchange, you simply surf then go home. But that’s just boring.
The spirit of “The Search,” Rip Curl’s reborn video series, embraces that journey into the unknown. During a boat trip to Indonesia, Rip Curl-ers Alana Blanchard, Nikki Van Dijk, and Tyler Wright enjoyed the comforts of a luxurious yacht and the many perfect waves, but they also docked and spent time with some of the rural-living locals. Nothing like a game of dirt volleyball to overcome the language and cultural disconnect.
In addition to bonding with the local villagers, the girls of course scored some of that Indo perfection, surfing their brains out until they forgot what day it is. “Is it Friday? Saturday? Maybe Monday?” Doesn’t matter, you’re on a boat in Indonesia.
