Year in year out, the kids continue to push the limits. Damn youths! Makin’ us old farts look bad! While most of us keep getting older, the standout surf prodigies keep getting young and better, too. Pretty soon there’ll be a kid in diapers busting air reverses.
San Diego’s Ryland Rubens is a far cry from Huggies, but he still fits the mold of skill beyond his years. At just 15, Ryland has a polished style, a bag full of tricks, and minimal hesitation in waves of consequence. Nowadays kids gotta come with the whole package – style, airs, and big wave finesse. Take Jack Robinson, for example. The explosive aerials are fun and all, but it seems to say a lot more if a youngin’ can show his or her stuff in large surf. And it looks like Ryland has been putting in his time at his local Black’s Beach. Watch as he pulls in on some heavy walls of water, all set to the tunes of bespectacled surf commentator extraordinaire Chris Cote and his band, Kut U Up.
