You can’t speak of legendary Hawaiian surfers without mentioning Dane Kealoha and Johnny Boy Gomes at least 30 or 40 times. In fact, failing to do so may result in a small fine/jail time if found guilty in Hawaii. Jokes aside, these guys were ripping harder than anyone in their generation at the time. Still, 20 years later, their insane rail maneuvers and ability to ride the foam ball (which Herbie Fletchers said they were doing before anyone else) is still considered peak performance. It’s crazy to think these guys were doing this 20 years ago—on those massive boards, no less. It all makes you wonder: How well would Dane and Johnny Boy in their heyday go in a contemporary CT heat? Pipe Masters? Something tells me they’d put up a damn good fight.
