Beaches on the Gold Coast of Australia have a lot of benefits. Of course, the most important is the impact man has on the natural habitat of the animals in the area, but coming in a close second is the economic impacts they have for the community. And as one of the most crowded places on earth to be a surfer, the masses have become a very real danger.
Brad Farmer, found of National Surfing Reserves, is asking for the Gold Coast City Council to pony up and add $25 million into the budget to create and maintain seven man-made surfing reefs.
It seems the mayor, Tom Tate, is open to the idea. “My support for surfing and beach preservation is without question,” he said. He urged Farmer to file the city council’s budget survey before the end of the month. “That way, his suggestion of how future ratepayer funds can be invested in surfing amenity will be documented and considered.”
