Tragic news out of Greenville, North Carolina this evening as Dave Mirra was found dead in his car from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mirra is a pioneer in the world of BMX, having won some 24 X Games medals. The 41-year-old had taken up rally car racing later in his career and remained an influential force in the world of action sports.
“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift,” said Greenville’s Mayor, Allen Thomas. “He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon.”
The police are still investigating the death and apparently plan to release more information Friday.
Mirra leaves behind a wife and two children.
