It’s not healthy…but it’s healthier? Photo: Ben and Jerry’s.
This week the vegan and the lactose intolerant will be dancing in the street. Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream just released 4 new flavors with no dairy: Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Coffee Caramel Fudge, and PB & Cookies. After years of fans sending the company pleas to release a non-dairy product, Ben & Jerry’s finally obliged and released four flavors that skipped the milk.
So how did they do it? Well, the company swapped milk for almond milk. The company reportedly experimented with all kinds of milk substitutes but finally settled on almond milk because it provided the best “blank canvas” for the ice cream. The company also partnered up with Vegan Action to release the flavors as certified vegan with no animal products of any kind (ice cream that has no eggs, milk, or honey?!). Plus the company also sourced the ingredients responsibly. Ben & Jerry’s uses fairtrade certified cocoa, sugar, bananas, coffee, and vanilla as well as all non-GMO ingredients. That’s some high quality ice cream.
Does this mean vegan is officially mainstream now? If companies like Ben & Jerry’s are jumping on the vegan train, then maybe the trend is even bigger than we thought. What do you think of the new flavors? Are you excited for vegan dessert options, or is this product just using labels to look healthy?
