Well, it took a few twists and turns but Eddie is finally going today. After a little longer than six years between events the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau is running for the 9th time. It may not be the prettiest day Waimea has ever turned out, with heavy closeouts dominating the dawn patrol surf report, but the massive swell running into Oahu’s North Shore in the morning served up enough size and consistency to get the green light. As of 5 AM HST Buoy 01 was showing 19′ at 19 seconds, indicating a strong start to the contest.
That start will include a all star lineup for Heat 1, which includes Shane Dorian, Kohl Christensen, Ramon Navarro, Sunny Garcia, Ross Clarke-Jones, Jamie Mitchell, and defending champion Greg Long.
