Remember when Nicolas Vuignier created that Internet storm a month or so ago when he released the video of himself skiing while swinging an iPhone over his head? Pretty awesome footage. When we Skyped the Swiss skier, he politely gave us the straight-arm, waiting to give away secrets until he released this video: “I always try to find creative ways to film skiing,” he said. “I came across (a piece of film) where someone used a ceiling fan and a GoPro to film fireworks and it gave it a 3-D look. I couldn’t carry a ceiling fan while skiing.”
So Vuignier invented his own device. It’s simple, but not so simple, and took him a few prototypes to make it happen. He used an iPhone to film himself in the Swiss mountains because he felt it provided him with the best video as it did 240 frames per second, the sweet spot for capturing video like this he says.
The device is sort of a plastic airplane that zooms around his head while he holds the fishing line attached to it. It’s pretty genius and definitely took some tinkering. And he’s giving out the details so you can do it yourself. Check out the process.
