The Inertia

The time of legalization is upon us and regardless of where you stand on the issue of marijuana and its decriminalization, the dominoes are falling throughout North America. Cannabis Growers of Canada created this television spot to promote the business side, which they report creates a 7 billion dollar a year industry in the country with some 17,000 farms. CGC uses mountain biking, snowboarding and surfing (although we’ve never seen anyone ride waves in Canada in board shorts) to promote the lifestyle and the product. No word yet on where exactly the spots will air but it might be a teaser of things to come as the industry grows in the U.S. and legalization continues with each election.

But lets get one thing clear. This is the first commercial promoting the industry. This isn’t the first marijuana commercial. There’s a lot of claiming going on about being the first bud advert. There was this gem promoting medical marijuana that came out in February of 2014. “You aren’t gonna buy your sushi on the street, eh?”

And then this lovely Canadian classic selling marijuana seeds in June of the same year:

Regardless, we never thought we’d see advertisements on television pushing prescription drugs where they rattle off side affects like auctioneers that make you think twice about seeing your doctor in the first place. Time will only tell where the commercial marijuana industry takes advertising and marketing. Presumably to a higher-minded place.
