The Inertia

What the, what? So BASE jumping is obviously dangerous enough, jumping off earth-bound objects, intent on throwing the chute with the perfect timing to experience the sensation of flying, even for a few moments. Exhilarating stuff. But this is what happens when you combine BASE jumping and acrobatics, like Norwegian surgeon Richard Henriksen did in 2012. He was trying to make a jump while swinging from a high bar. His failed stunt was being filmed for a show called “Normal Madness,” on Norwegian TV.

Henriksen survived, orienting himself and pulling the chord in the nick of time. When it happened, he said the gravity of the situation didn’t hit him until sitting with his 5 kids watching the video. “I sat with the two youngest children, reading and singing to them” he said. “Then it dawned on me that my children could have been without a dad.”
