The Inertia

Ice blading. Invented in Northern Europe this past winter, this brand new action sport of sorts is kind of like Cool Runnings meets the 1986 Hollywood skateboard classic, Thrashin’. But before immediately rejecting it, give it a chance. It’s actually quite gnarly.

Danny Strasser, the mad dare devil in the video, found the sport of ice blading almost completely by chance. He would visit the small town of Sigulda in the Vidzeme Region of Latvia in the summer, where he began riding the concrete bob sled tracks on his longboard for fun. After doing this for nearly a decade, Danny had the great idea to return to the ice-laden bob sled tracks in winter with his ice blading prototype that featured a skateboard with blades instead of wheels.

Winter Olympics 2018?

Whether or not ice blading will be the next big thing or if it will be considered for the Winter Olympics at some point is still up in the air. However, it certainly has the potential. All it would really need to make that next jump is to be picked up by Red Bull, redesigned with a newer, better board, and perhaps renamed. After all, it sure beats the hell out of some other Olympic events, like cross country skiing, ice skating, and curling, to name a few. Imagine seeing someone flying through a corner at 90 miles per hour on one of these bad boys. I’d certainly watch. Question is: Would you?
