The Inertia

Chances are good if you watch surf videos, Ben Weiland has filmed some of them. Chances are even better that it is a clip you remember–he has a penchant for not only getting amazing footage, but for getting amazing footage in places that are both beautiful and difficult to get to.

Ben is an extraordinarily nice person. He laughs easily, speaks softly, and is probably the most humble person on the planet, although he shouldn’t be. Creative to the extreme, Ben’s making a name for himself in different facets of artistic endeavors ranging from cinematography and filmmaking to illustration and design.

He’s been behind some of Surfer Magazine’s most recent flicks: Russia: The Outpostwhere he headed to Kamchatka, Russian with Keith Malloy, Dane Gudauskas, Cyrus Sutton, Trevor Gordon, and Chris Burkard to find waves in one of the most desolate places on earth. Along with Burkard, he created The Cradle of Storms, where he spent two weeks on a tiny island in the Aleutians. On that trip, they discovered a world-class wave.

Red Bull does a little thing called Reel Life. In a nutshell, they “scour the world and round up the best surf cinematographers in the business, and then ask them to package their very best footage into one edit.” First on their list? Ben Weiland. Enjoy.
