So, maybe someone out there can let us know what’s up with this little Darwin Award in the making: apparently skaters in the Los Angeles area have been jumping out of their cars to kick the flip on area freeways. Now, we’ve got nothing against skating, skaters or going big on a skateboard. But this seems like a curious trend, one that has even garnered the hashtag, #freewaychallenge.

Local news media is pinning the sketchy trend on Nakel Smith, a talented pro from Los Angeles, although, as is the case with many such movements, there’s almost a universal groundswell, making it tough to pinpoint the actual source. Regardless, sick of long waits in traffic (can’t really blame them there), skaters are jumping out of their stopped cars on freeways around the Los Angeles area and going all street on bridge pilings and off ramps.

The California Highway Patrol and LAPD have been ramping up patrols on local thoroughfares and searching out social media accounts to prosecute local skaters. “This is not a joke to us,” said one highway patrolman. Apparently not.
