Back in the late 80s and early 90s, Tom Curren was king. He surfed on boards made by Maurice Cole. It was a near-perfect collaboration of talent, and it was one that changed surfing forever. One board in particular, 7’8 pintail called Ol’ Yellow Rail that Curren surfed over the famous Hawaiian winter of 1991, recently sold at auction for $16,000. And now they’re back working together. This weekend at The Boardroom show in Del Mar, Curren and Cole are unveiling the Reverse Vee Project.
Between 1989 and 1992, Curren and Cole created a few very influential surfboards. The RV Project is a collector’s series of six of them, including, of course, Ol’ Yellow Rail. For those that haven’t heard, the Boardroom is a show that puts a whole bunch of people who absolutely love surfboards in the same room. The greatest part about it is the fact that anyone can go and see some of surfing’s greatest legends wandering through among the booths.
“We chose Boardroom for the RV Project launch because it’s a perfect match – a show committed to the best in modern surfboard design and manufacturing,” said Cole. “And because it’s open to the public. It doesn’t shut anyone out. Anyone can come and see.”
Maurice and Tom will be taking orders from the RV Project’s quiver. Buyers can pick from Tom’s 6’9” Santa Cruz and Bells Beach event winner, his first 8’3” MC Sunset gun, and the original first-of-its-kind 6’3” reverse vee bottom.
And yes, there are perks: every buyer gets a limited edition, personally signed copy of The RV Project book, written by Nick Carroll with photos from iconic photographers like Tom Servais, Jeff Hornbaker, Art Brewer, Sylvain Cazenave, and Eric Chauche.
