If you’re reading this site, there’ a good chance you’re an athlete, like to be active or even, by chance, care what you put into your body. And there’s also a decent chance you like to enjoy a libation once in a while. And that’s okay. But some options are healthier than others. Think less calories (no beer) and less sugar. While all alcohol contains sugar (and calories), here’s three healthier options:

Wine
Calorie-wise, you can’t really go wrong with vino. According to some reports, one ounce contains around 20 calories while a five-ounce glass clocks in at around 100. Avoid desert wines to avoid the sugar. But the best part about wine is that it contains anti-oxidants, which help control cholesterol levels and in turn prevent heart disease.

Hard Alcohol
Hard alcohol is relatively low in calories—1.5 ounces sports less than 100 calories. But there are caveats to this. Most bar tenders have a habit of pouring a bit heavier (not a bad thing) and most people mix hard alcohol with sugary mixers, and sugar definitely tops all evils in our quest to be more healthy. So stick with clear liquids like diet tonic or water to mix with your vodka or gin. Our favorite? Try soda water with lime, lemon or another pure fruit juice like the leftover juice from a bowl of strawberries.

Tequila
Tequila gets its own section because it’s pretty awesome all around, and we’re not just talking Cinco de Maya celebrations. Tequila is brewed from agavin, one of nature’s natural sweeteners and some reports show that it can lower blood glucose levels. Plus the mixers are easy: soda water, lime, even just a shot of tequila and a half ounce of lime juice. Mmmmm. And tequila is truly gluten free. But again, if you’re going for margaritas (especially in restaurants), avoid the super sugary mixes. Try a splash of mix with mostly lime. Or check out this recipe. Enjoy.
