Multiple outlets are reporting today that BMX icon Dave Mirra suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE as confirmed by a Toronto-based neuropathologist.

Mirra, who won 24 X Games medals during his storied career, helping to establish that brand as one of action sport’s top billings, passed away in February after taking his own life.

Doctor’s described Mirra’s brain as having the distinguishable signs of CTE, caused by repeated blows to the head. The symptoms can include depression and a “lack of impulse control.” All-pro NFL defensive end Bubba Smith was the 90th player diagnosed with the disease this week with retired stars like the Chicago Bears Jim McMahon openly talking about CTE’s affects. The league has also seen multiple high-profile suicides and some say CTE might be the reason. Mirra is the first action sports star to be diagnosed.

“We would like to thank our family, friends and the overwhelming number of Dave’s fans who have supported us during this difficult time,” Mirra’s wife, Lauren, said in a statement. “We ask for your continued support in honoring Dave’s legacy and for your patience as we plan to create a platform for CTE awareness and research.”
