The Inertia

I’m a skeptical guy. Not the “moon landing was a hoax” type, but one that things approaching everything with a healthy dose of critical thinking is a good thing. Don’t accept everything at face value, etc.

If the surf world had a hype-o-meter, it’d probably reach a max reading at the drop of every new John John clip. Or Kelly wave pool video. They don’t break the internet, but the they break the surf internet. But doesn’t everybody surf the web? Whatever. You get the picture.

So when Hurley released the first installment of John John’s series Twelve, I tried to shut out the hype. But even with a critical eye, I couldn’t deny how great it was. The cinematography was stunning. Surfing, top notch. And the storyline was well done, relatable even.

Now John is back in the second episode. This time focusing on his home, and his love for it. Compared to the first episode, the second is more of a traditional surf clip – the storyline is overshadowed by surf shots (incredible as they might be). But the motif of family and friends, and the comforts of home are still there. It’s more complex than your average web edit, if not as good as the first episode. Still, it doesn’t disappoint.

John, his brother, and friends take turns sending it at pumping Jaws and Waimea. And, as you might expect, shots on the North Shore demonstrate John’s unparalleled comfort in the heavy waves found right in his backyard.
