The Inertia

Our friends on the East Coast are a different breed. Conditioned to wait and wait for waves, endure harsh winters (except in Florida), and consistently run the risk that a wave-generating hurricane might make landfall causing irreparable devastation, yes, the right coast surfer is a hardy creature. The only respite, if ever there were one, is that Puerto Rico (the magical warm water land that offers consistent sizable surf in the winter time) is close by – it’s a just-over-3.5-hour flight from JFK to San Juan.

Puerto Rico is an escape – for the sponsored surfer and the unsponsored surfer alike. And ‘Jobless’ is an exploration of that. Filmed over the 2015/2016 winter on the island, and following some notable talents from New York, like Leif Engstrom (an unsponsored phenom) and Balaram Stack (Volcom’s New York breadwinner), and a laundry list of local surfers, the film is a visualization of the fine line between living to surf, and surfing to live.
