When the horn sounded signalling the start of the 2016 Quik Pro France, hopes were high. Conditions were exciting, if nothing else. Pre-event sessions were full of strange, warbly waves–not perfect by any means, but the potential was there for some strangeness. Then, everything went sideways at plage des Culs Nus, Hossegor.
Within two heats of the first round, the event was put on standby, with hopes that Mother Nature would get out of her dirty skirt and put on a party dress. Now, it appears that she’s has–but it’s not helping some surfers. Notably, Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith fell to Ryan Callinan and Leonardo Fioravanti, and Parko lost to Matt Banting.
Wilko might’ve found whatever it was he lost after the first couple of events. Although Joan Duru put him through the paces, the world number three came out on top after a close heat.
