Remember when the surf world scoffed at Nazaré? “It’s not a real wave,” they said. “It isn’t top to bottom!” They pointed and laughed from their armchairs. Then, slowly, a few very well known big wave guys followed GMac’s lead and gave it a shot. They came back with a newfound and genuine respect for the place. It is, after all, one of the heaviest waves on earth. It’s also the place where the world’s biggest wave was surfed. Nazaré is a shining gem in the world of surf, and it’s finally getting the respect it deserves.
The video above was shot during the first big swell of the season in Portugal. Ruben Gonzalez, José Gregorio, Tom Lowe, Alex Botelho, Sebastian Steudtner and a few others took it on while Pedro Santos Ribeiro caught the whole thing on camera. You might want to mute it, though.
