The Inertia

Things in surfing have changed in the last few years. As with fashion, surfing is cyclical–the old becomes new and the new becomes old, like Oakley blades and horn-rimmed glasses. Such is the case with the twin-fin, a board nearly rendered irrelevant when Simon Anderson won the 1981 Bells Beach event on his new-fangled thruster. Twin fins, though, have reemerged, mostly because the average Joe got tired of riding a pencil thin board built for Kelly Slater and even Kelly Slater got tired of the same old thing.

Here we see Filipe Toledo, a dyed in the wool high-performance surfer stepping out of his comfort zone and onto a twinnie… and it’s surprisingly easy on the eyes.
