The best thing about being a psyched grom under 10 is that every wave is overhead. You also weigh less, meaning less swell energy is still enough to get you going on a shortboard while older guys, heavier on their feet, might be forced to ride longboards to get waves at all.
Kai Kai Alcala is one such eternally-psyched grom. The 6-year-old hails from the Philippines – a spot called Cloud 9 being his home break. And the kid’s got talent, dragging his hand stalling for barrels that are too small for anyone else in the lineup to crouch into. Just one of the benefits of being micro.
