A 47-year-old woman spent nearly two days walking in the snow to find help for her husband and 10-year-old son after their car become stuck in the snow on backwoods Forest Service roads near the Grand Canyon’s north rim.
Karen Klein and her family are from Pennsylvania and rented a car in Las Vegas. They were unable to travel the main roads given that they are closed for the winter season. So they navigated on a GPS but the car became stuck in the deep snow.
“I can’t leave my son without a mom,” she told a Philadelphia television station. “I can’t leave my husband without a wife. I can’t have my parents bury me.”
According to reports, Klein started Thursday and walked nearly 30 miles for 30 straight hours looking for Route 67 before authorities found her. The professor at Northampton Community College and triathlete did have extra food and was wearing layers to protect her from the elements. When she didn’t return with help Friday afternoon, her husband, staying with their son, was able to move to higher ground and get cell coverage to notify help. Klein had found shelter in an old guard station and was located Saturday morning, making for a joyous Christmas for the family.
