What surfer hasn’t dreamt of dropping everything, picking up, and just going. Somewhere. Anywhere. Where the water is warm, tubes are plenty, and food and lodging cheap.
Then come the yeah buts. “Yeah but my job.” “Yeah but my girlfriend.” “Yeah but responsibility.” Stories like the one above from Kyle Buthman where he, Austin Smith-Ford, Tessa Timmons, and James Mitchell spend an extended period of time exploring the furthest reaches of Indonesia are just FOMO fuel.
Sure it’s noble to think about those responsibilities you have waiting for you – a 50-day stint anywhere would probably be grounds for termination from most employers. But, living vicariously through films, notwithstanding how incredible some are, can only go so far. Maybe it’s time to get after it.
