The Inertia

California’s string of giant storms is taking its toll. This morning, an avalanche on U.S. Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows buried a pair of cars beneath the carnage. The highway was closed and no fatalities were reported. But the selfie game on the pass was on point.

David Ortiz and Neal Allen were traveling the road when the car they were riding in was buried. They didn’t panic. In fact, they had cell service and posted the below shot to Facebook with some actual useful information: “Caught in a slide an Highway 89, South of Alpine. 100-yard debris field hit the road. Expect delays.”

Awesomely matter-of-fact of them, considering they were just buried by an avalanche. They later responded good-naturedly in a comments section on Facebook: “Just a little more info; this picture was taken about forty-five minutes after being buried. We immediately turned the car off and called 911. Once we knew help was on the way, there was nothing left to do but keep our spirits up.”

And ours. Stay safe out there. This storm has been biblical in proportions.
