John John Florence’s web series, Twelve, is better than anything else like it. The world champion surfs on a different level than anyone else–he does things that no one else can, and he does them with a frightening regularity. Twelve showcases it with frightening clarity.
It’s not just his contest surfing, of course. Rather, his contest surfing takes a backseat–especially in this final episode–to what he’s truly capable of. His life, while it surely focusses heavily on surfing, does have a depth to it. John John’s an avid sailor, which is why he was able to head out with the Oracle Team, two-time America’s Cup winner, while they trained for a third America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017. And although John John at his peak is unbeatable, his jaunt with the foil team gave him even more motivation. “It’s insane to see that commitment of everyone on the team to want to win. It made me even more psyched up for next year,” he said. “I was like, ‘what can I do to better myself?'”
