The Inertia

Most people don’t go left at Jaws. For good reason, too. “Going left at Jaws will either give you the best ride of your life or the worst ride of your life,” wrote Marc Chambers, a photographer who has had his camera trained on Peahi for years. “It runs longer than the right–all the way through until it hits the inside bay of Jaws, which consists of giant sharp lava rock boulders and a good five foot+ shore break. Fall on a left and you’ll be getting pounded by every wave of the set, so it makes sense that most goofy foot riders like to take the right!”

Every now and then, though, a left lines up, and they’re good enough to be pretty damn tempting to those who’re so inclined. Alvaro Malpartida, from Punta Hermosa, Peru, is one of those people who’s so inclined. And yeah, it didn’t work out… but if it had, it would’ve been the drop of his life.
