Anyone who’s stood on the beach in front of Pipe when it’s going off can attest that it is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The sand rumbles beneath your feet. The wave thunders in your chest, and there’s a feeling in the air of awe and admiration for those who surf it well–which, on big days, is basically everyone in the lineup. It’s not a place for the unsure. It’s a place for those with the right mix of confidence, talent, and, to put it bluntly, balls.
