The Inertia

Ever watched a pregame press conference leading up to an American football game? I can’t speak for the folks who watch stuff like soccer because I like cool sports only, but I imagine their event coverage before game time is no different from what American curmudgeon coaches give the press.

“You know, it’s really gonna come down to who wants it more. We figure if we win the battle of the trenches, avoid losing the turnover margin, and make less mental errors than the guys on the other side of the ball, we have a decent shot here. It’s all about preparation, and we’re not gonna be out coached. I’m fine with them beating us, but I told my guys I’m not fine with us beating us. But without taking any credit away from the other team, I expect my guys to out athlete them…”

You don’t have to be fluent in coachspeak to know 99% of what flies out of an athlete or coach’s mouth when it comes to x’s and o’s is disingenuous crap. And this is why I adore #TourNotes. Yeah, the guys give their fair share of generic responses when they were asked about their strategy upon arriving in Fiji for the Outerknown Fiji Pro. But there’s always at least a bit of self-deprecation behind comments like “finish all my waves” (Kolohe) and John John saying he just needs a solid spring suit like Brother’s. It keeps things entertaining. Now, is there any surprise that the best of them all comes from an 11-time champ? “I think it’s a pretty good strategy. There’s no rights, so I’ll probably go left.”
