John John Florence is one amazing showing away from defending his world title. At home, no less. And while the surf world collectively descends on the Seven Mile Miracle (we’ll be there next week!), on the opening day of the Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach, John announced he’d be taking a back seat from the action to focus on more important matters at hand.
“It was a difficult decision for me,” said Florence said in a statement. “As much as I enjoy competing at home, I want to fully prepare for and focus on the Pipe Masters.”
With a quarterfinal finish at Haleiwa, a win at Pipe could be enough to clinch the Triple Crown and World Title all in one go. Stranger things have happened. But, that will all depend on how others fare at Sunset. It’s a smart move from John, if you ask me. Only bummer is we won’t get to see turns like this one at 1:10 in a jersey this year:
