The Inertia

If you’re a normal surfer, you have some kind of thought about foiling. It’s easy to lump people into groups, so here we go:

1. You hate hate HATE foils. Your surfing is mediocre at best, but you think it’s much better than it is. You wear only black wetsuits and ride only shortboards. You look down your nose at anyone riding a mini-mal and have said more than once, “fucking longboarders!”

2. You love love love love foils. You think Kai Lenny and Laird Hamilton are gods. You do surf specific workouts, including paddle exercises. You think about your diet and how it relates to surfing, you’ve taken a breath holding workshop, and you think obsessively about fin and board construction and how it affects your surfing.

3. Foils? Meh. You think that foils look difficult and an appreciate that it would be pretty damn fun. You can also see why people might think they’re dangerous. You, however, have no interest in getting involved in any kind of stupid debate over it, because you just like surfing, no matter how you’re doing it.

Are you one of those? Oh, and here’s what’s happening in the video above. Josh van Brederode is riding a Slingshot Converter Foilboard with a Slingshot Surf Foil with an H1 Wing (that’s for you number twos) at a place called Deadman’s Reef on the Gold Coast. Eighty seconds on any kind of surfboard? Yes, please!
