Surfers along the eastern seaboard have a thing for hyperbole. Maybe it’s something to do with ridable days being fewer and further between that when swell does come, the hype snowballs – everyone and their mother wants a piece of the action.
As you’re likely well aware by now, Winter Storm Riley delivered ample thick-lipped surf to New Jersey over the last week, with a certain reeling left-hander resembling the brown water grinder that is Namibia’s famed Skeleton Bay. “Newmibia” they’re calling it. Haters on Instagram and Facebook have collectively poo-pooed the claim. But with all due respect, the evidence within shows New Jersey was indeed proper pumping, and that’s not the hype beast talking. So, let those who scored have their fun and call it whatever the hell they want. And we’ll sit back in equal jealousy and delight. Jersey, baby, you never looked so good.
