Albee Layer and Torrey Meister have been friends for a long, long time. They’ve been on more than a few trips together and gotten into more than their fair share of crazy situations together. Now that they both ride waves for a living, they’ve learned to make some interesting decisions together. Take for example, their trip to Portugal over the winter.
European swell charts looked more than enticing, and it looked very likely that the Cave would do its thing. As many would do when they’ve been afforded the opportunity to chase waves all over the world when the swell dictates, Meister and Layer booked tickets and flew to Portugal. Then, of course, the WSL came knocking.
Layer, as you well know, loves Jaws. He surfs it better than nearly anyone else, so when he got an email informing him that the Jaws Challenge was sitting at a yellow light and potentially running in a mere 72 hours, he and Meister realized that they’d better get to work and make this Portugal trip worthwhile.
So what does one do when both the Cave and Jaws light up at basically the same time? Score both, of course. When their flights back to Maui crept up, they decided that they’d skip their flight in favor of a later one and a few extra caves at the Cave. With any luck, they’d make it back in time for Albee’s first heat at massive Jaws, and that’s just what they did.
