Chasing swell ain’t always easy. Mother Nature’s a fickle beast, forecasts aren’t always all that accurate, and surfing can be tough on the body. Even more so when you’re attempting to make the call on a place across the globe. Roberto D’Amico knows that all too well, but he also knows that you’ve got to be willing to make some concessions in the search.
At the beginning of November, Roby decided to make the trek to Africa. Within hours, he had a group of friends rounded up who were willing to take the gamble. When they arrived, however, the swell they were watching had gone off direction, and what they found was not what they were hoping for. Instead of calling it quits and chalking the trip up to a skunking, they hit the road, changed their return flights, and headed to the island—which, we suspect, is Cabe Verde, which lies just off the western coast of Morocco. And, as is so often the case, although the waves finally did show up, they were just the icing on the cake. Despite a trip-ending injury (which turned out to be two busted ligaments), the cake itself was the island itself, the experiences they had, and the people they met.
