Henrik May, a German expat living in Namibia, has been outfitting ski trips in the 31,000-square-mile Namib Desert since 2003. He’s doing dune turns from June to November, so if you get lucky enough to find yourself surfing Skeleton Bay, and want something different, like, way different, then maybe give this dune skiing thing a try. And the coolest part–depending on your perspective–is he’s keeping the ancient art of telemark skiing alive and well in the deserts of southern Africa.
Henrik has lived an interesting life: he and his family escaped East Germany in the late 1980s, he’s set a world record for speed while skiing sand dunes and written a book about his adventures. No word on whether he’s surfed Skeleton Bay. You can read more about his guiding biz, here.
