The Inertia

The Women’s Tour isn’t packed with a lot of action above the lip. We’ll see the occasional alley-oop from the ladies here and there, but for the most part, it just has yet to become a major part of the competitive game. Apparently, Carissa Moore aims to either change that altogether or at least be ahead of the game once it all becomes more commonplace.

“I feel like all the girls are just scratching the surface of aerial surfing,” she says. “Everyone’s gonna be taking it to a whole new level, especially with this new wave pool technology and having the repetition and the opportunity to practice it over and over again.”

Sure enough, it looks like the three-time world champ has been taking some coaching from Shane Beschen in Waco, Texas.

There’s no doubt wave pools are going to play as heavy a role in competitive surfing as they will in bringing the sport to the landlocked masses. In fact, if anybody stands to benefit the most from Kelly’s wave, Wave Garden pools, and the new BSR pool, it will be the professionals mastering their craft repetition after repetition after repetition. Moore is currently ranked sixth on the 2018 Tour and in the hunt for her fourth title. If adding a solid aerial game is the key to her next championship, could this be the first major shift we see in competitive surfing thanks to wave pools?
