In what can only be described as the most Australian news ever, on Saturday, police in Victoria, Australia responded to multiple calls of a distressed kangaroo floundering in the surf.
Video of the incident posted to Facebook by Victoria Police shows the ‘roo jumping into the waves in the town of Rosebud, then flailing trying to get back to shore. According to a police report, that wasn’t the first time the marsupial had tried its hand at bodysurfing that afternoon. After its first attempt, a member of the public wrapped the animal in a blanket. Police arrived on the scene, and the ‘roo apparently got a second wind, jumping back into the waves.
“A Sergeant and a Senior Sergeant noticed the animal in distress and hopped to it and jumped into the water,” Victoria PD explained in a Facebook post. “The ‘roo was wrapped in blankets and taken to Rosebud Police Station where it was assessed by a local Wildlife Centre.”
“The ‘roo is currently being cared for but is said to be in good spirits and lucky to be alive given the amount of salt water he inhaled, thanks to his rescuers,” explained Rosebud PD.
