The Inertia

A 53-year-old man was found floating face down by fellow surfers in the Uppers lineup on Saturday – sadly, good samaritans and officials were unable to revive him.

According to Rich Haydon, South Sector Superintendent for the California State Parks, the incident occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. The victim, who remained unidentified, was known among other surfers and had paddled out for a surf.

Eyewitnesses saw the man paddling and struggling – after duck diving under a few waves they told officials that he seemed in distress, Haydon told The Inertia.

When he came up floating face down, other surfers came to his rescue, and brought him to the beach, carrying him on a surfboard to the east side of the railroad tracks. The rescue crew performed CPR until paramedics from Camp Pendleton arrived, but to no avail.

Haydon could not say whether the deceased had been suffering from health issues at the time of the incident, but explained further information would become available after the San Diego Coroner’s Office issues its report.
