Hondarribia is a little fishing village situated at the very end of Spain’s northern coast, bordering France. It’s well known for its rich architecture and is home to many surfers, but thanks to its location, it only gets waves a handful of times each year under very specific conditions. Knowing this, the local surfers make sure they surf this wave every time it breaks.
During the first week of February, the forecast predicted a swell big enough to make Hondarribia break. The catch? The best conditions would come together at night. The local guys saw this as a good excuse to organize a night surf, so they rented stadium lighting for the occasion. Sure enough, everybody woke up to a flat ocean during the day with no signs that waves were on the way. Once the sun set, Hondarribia started working and Basque mainstays Ibon, Iker and Adur Amatriain, Mikel Aguirre and Hodei Collazo put in six hours of work, leaving no wave unridden.
