In what was a defining moment of the 2019 Burton US Open, Maddie Mastro landed a new trick in the women’s halfpipe realm while upsetting one of the sport’s best, Chloe Kim, who hadn’t lost in over a year (that includes PyeongChang). The Wrightwood, California native (Mt. High) has been knocking on the door. She finished with a Bronze at the 2018 X Games but this was the run of her life and she seemed fairly relaxed, as you can hear her singing as she enters the halfpipe. She then stomps a double crippler (basically, a double backflip above the coping) at the end of her run.
“I’m just fully overwhelmed,” she said. “This is my first contest win, and for it to be at the US Open is this incredible amazing feeling. This trick is something I want to be doing consistently and make progression a norm for women’s snowboarding.”
Kim announced today on social media that she broke her ankle during the first run of the halfpipe final and that she’ll need surgery.
