Matahi Drollet is one of the best surfers at Teahupoʻo. That’s saying a lot since the best surfers on earth converge at The End of the Road when a big swell tracks towards it. He’s made countless barrels out there look easy—but none of them can touch this one. From the seemingly impossible drop to being impossibly far behind the foam ball, Drollet’s wave might just be one of the best waves ever ridden there. Heavyweights in the surf world agree.
“That one will be epic in 100 years,” wrote Shane Dorian on Instagram. “This is one of the best barrels I’ve seen anyone get out there and make it,” said Johnny Boy Gomes. “The best barrel ever in Teahupoʻo?” Pato Teixeira said “My opinion is yes!!! The best from all the barrels (that) I know at Teahupoo.”
And while “best barrel” is subjective, anyone with eyeballs would have to agree that this one’s in the running.
