Writer/Surfer

There’s a debate that rages in our office every so often about podcasts. See, I have a theory that there are two sorts of podcast listeners out there that are for the most part mutually exclusive. The first is the kind that enjoys long, meandering, unscripted conversations between a person or two and a host – the most popular in the genre being Joe Rogan’s Joe Rogan Experience. The second, and I find myself in this camp, is the type of person that enjoys a meticulously curated, episodic, plot-driven narrative (think Serial, Dirty John, or S-Town).

As I say, I like narrative and can’t stand the two-hour conversations, which often leads to flare-ups with those in the office that can’t listen to stories. Agree to disagree, I suppose. If I’m being honest, part of the reason I dislike conversations is they seem to go everywhere and nowhere at the same time, and I can’t say there’s ever been a factoid that’s knocked my socks off. Until today.

Just two minutes into Mark Occhilupo’s latest Occ-Cast featuring Jack Johnson, Occy admits that he’s never Googled anyone before. Not that he rarely uses Google. No. He says the first time he used Google to search for something was recently, and he looked up “Bah Bah Black Sheep” for his infant daughter. Naturally, in the lead up to interviewing Jack, Occy decided he’d Google the man. “You came straight up and I was like, no way!”

Now, somebody explain to Occy how satellite radio works.
