Kama3, the grandpig of the famous Kama the surfing pig, died on Saturday afternoon after unknown suspects killed her. According to Kai Holt, her owner, she was killed by “ignorant, desperate, idiotic individuals in broad daylight.”
Kama, the original surfing pig, was adopted after it was found on a camping trip at Bellows Beach on Oahu. Holt and his family stumbled across the orphaned piglet when it wandered into their campsite. He quickly became a part of their family.
They named the pig Kamapua’a, which was shortened to Kama. Then one day, the pig fell into their pool and did something that surprised them all: Kama the pig swam. From there, it was just a short leap to surfing, and Kama became Kama the Surfing Pig. He caught his first wave with Kai at Baby Makapu’u, and his career took off. Before long, he was about as famous as a pig can be. Appearing in numerous Hollywood blockbusters like Hawaii 5-0, Jurassic Park 2 and the Jumanji franchise, Kama stole the hearts of millions around the world.
Soon, though, he became a little too big to surf, but the surfing pig tradition continued on with his offspring. Kama3 was the youngest of the surfing pigs. “We have lost a Hawaiian island icon,” said Holt to KHON2 News. “A legendary beast who has touched the hearts and souls of millions of people around the world.”
